Through a series of intimate portraits and personal stories, Fitzsimons work celebrates children and young people living with disability, chronic illness, and complex needs.

The 'With Grace' Project is a deeply personal documentary portrait project by photographer Niamh Fitzsimons, inspired by her daughter Grace, who lives with a rare genetic condition called 4q21 microdeletion syndrome. Through a series of intimate portraits and personal stories, the project celebrates children and young people living with disability, chronic illness, and complex needs. It seeks to challenge assumptions, increase visibility, and create a space where participants and their families feel seen, valued, and represented.

At the heart of Niamh's artistic practice is a commitment to authentic storytelling. Rather than focusing on diagnosis, limitation, or difference, her work highlights individuality, connection, joy, resilience, and the unique personalities of each child. Sessions are conducted at the participant's pace, creating a safe and inclusive environment where genuine moments can unfold naturally.

As both a photographer and a parent navigating the disability community, Niamh brings lived experience to the project. This perspective informs her approach, allowing her to create portraits that are both visually compelling and emotionally honest.

The 'With Grace' Project is ultimately a celebration of childhood in all its forms. It invites viewers to look beyond labels and recognise the beauty, strength, and humanity that exists within every family. Through portraiture, the project aims to foster understanding, encourage conversation, and ensure that children with disabilities and invisible illnesses are represented not for their challenges, but for who they are.

We at The Creator Incubator acknowledge that we are meeting and working on the traditional country of the Awabakal and Worimi peoples. We recognise and respect their cultural heritage, beliefs, and continuing relationship with the land, and that they are the proud survivors of more than two hundred years of dispossession - land never ceded.
